Sea freight moves most of the world's traded goods and is usually the most economical way to ship large or heavy consignments overseas. Here is how ocean freight shipping works, what drives sea cargo prices, and how to choose between FCL and LCL.
A sea freight shipment starts with a booking on a shipping line, arranged by your freight forwarder. The container is collected and loaded at your premises or a container freight station, export customs clearance is completed, and the cargo is taken to the port of loading. After the vessel sails — sometimes with a transhipment at an intermediate port — the cargo is discharged at the destination port, cleared through import customs and delivered to the consignee. Because every leg depends on vessel schedules, ocean transit is typically measured in weeks rather than days, which is why early planning matters.
With Full Container Load (FCL), you use an entire 20ft or 40ft container for your cargo alone. It means less handling, a lower risk of damage and, for larger volumes, a better cost per unit. Less than Container Load (LCL) lets you share container space with other shippers' cargo and pay only for the volume you use, which suits smaller or less frequent shipments. The trade-off is extra handling at the consolidation and de-consolidation stages, so LCL transit can take a little longer. For oversized, heavy or otherwise specialised cargo, speak to the team early so the right equipment and carrier can be arranged.
Sea freight prices are not fixed — they move with the trade lane, the carrier, the season and the market. The main factors are:
Because these variables change often, BLC reviews rates across carriers and quotes each shipment individually. Contact us for a sea cargo price on your route.
A sea freight forwarder takes care of the work between your warehouse and the vessel: carrier selection and booking, pickup, documentation, storage, consolidation, customs clearance and shipment tracking. BLC handles these steps under one team, alongside our customs clearance and global freight forwarding services, so the paperwork and the cargo stay with one accountable team from booking to delivery.
